July 15th Technical Dinner: Electronic Leak Detection: Lessons Learned from ELD Testing and Continuous Moisture Monitoring for Roofing

Presenter:
With over 25 years of experience in customer service and business administration, Shaun has spent the past decade specializing in Electronic Leak Detection (ELD) for roofing and waterproofing systems. He is an active member of CSI, ASTM, and IIBEC, and has worked extensively with property managers, building owners, contractors, architects, engineers, consultants, manufacturers, and testing agencies on both forensic leak investigations and quality assurance testing for new construction projects. Shaun has delivered hundreds of educational presentations and live demonstrations on ELD technologies across North America. In recognition of his expertise and contribution to industry education, he received the Presenter of the Year Award from the Chicago Chapter of IIBEC in 2020. His professional goal is to promote a clear, practical understanding of Electronic Leak Detection and to help all stakeholders achieve accurate, reliable, and verifiable results in their roofing and waterproofing projects.
Synopsis of Presentation:
This one-hour presentation offers practical insights from 20+ case studies on Electronic Leak Detection (ELD) for roofing and waterproofing. Topics include ELD for quality control, forensic leak investigation, and continuous moisture monitoring. The course covers ASTM D7877 and ASTM D8231 standards, teaching proper testing applications and how to prevent moisture intrusion. By the end, participants will effectively understand ELD for roof quality assurance and maintenance programs.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain the science, capabilities, & limitations of Electronic Leak Detection (ELD) in accordance with ASTM Guide D7877 & ASTM Practice D8231.
- Analyze & describe common causes of failures in various roofing & waterproofing membranes using real-world examples.
- Evaluate potential future design & construction failures by interpreting & applying data gathered from real-time construction moisture monitoring.
- Differentiate & recommend appropriate applications of ELD testing & continuous monitoring for risk mitigation/loss control
